McQueen’s father was a taxi driver in the East End, where he grew up.

He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List of 2003 for his services to the fashion industry.

The dress McQueen made for Kate Winslet for the 1998 Academy Awards later fetched $57,500 at an auction. He also designed the 'Titanic' star’s wedding gown.
