He turned down the role of James Bond 007.
He donated his entire salary of $100,000 for 'Arsenic and Old Lace' in 1944 to the U.S. War Relief Fund.
People were surprised by his retirement in 1966 and, despite the attempts of directors such as Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder and Stanley Kubrick to get him out of retirement and into their films, he never worked again.
According to his will dated 26 November 1984, his body was to be cremated and no funeral service held. And he requested that his ashes were to be scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
He was voted the 6th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
