Kim Cattrall Biography

At the age of eleven, Cattrall returned to England, where she studied at the London Academy for Music and the Dramatic Arts. Upon returning to Vancouver to finish High School, she won a prestigious scholarship to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts at the age of sixteen, where she was spotted by director Otto Preminger.

After Cattrall graduated, Preminger cast her in his film, 'Rosebud' (1975) and signed her on a five year contract, which was bought out the following year by Universal Studios.

For much of the 1970s, Cattrall undertook a wide variety of television work, including appearances in 'Quincy', 'The Incredible Hulk' and 'Charlie's Angels', as well as working regularly on Broadway.

In 1980, Cattrall embarked on a number of successful movie roles, starring opposite Jack Lemmon in director Bob Clarke’s 'Tribute'. This was followed with parts in 'Porky’s' (1981), 'Police Academy' (1984) and John Carpenter’s 'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986).

Cattrall has yet to match the success of her small-screen career in her forays into the big screen; other notable film roles include 'Mannequin' (1987), 'Bonfire of the Vanities' (1990) and 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' (1991).

However, it was HBO’s decision to cast Cattrall as femme-fatale, Samantha, in their smash-hit series 'Sex and the City' (1998-2003) that provided her career with a tumultuous second wind. The show, based on the New York Observer columns of journalist Candace Bushnell, has earned Cattrall her numerous award nominations and has virtually transformed her into a household name.

In 2003, Cattrall won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series, although she has continued her run of poor form in film with her appearance in the Britney Spear’s vehicle, 'Crossroads' (2002).

Kim has been married three times, first in her early twenties to author Larry Davis, then in 1982 to German architect Andreas Lyson, whom she divorced in 1989, and most recently to Mark Levison. The couple live in New York.
