Malcolm in the Middle is the story of a 13-year-old boy whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he has an IQ of 165. Malcolm has to struggle with adapting to his new classmates as he is forced to move into the ‘gifted class’ as well as his eccentric family. The offbeat series was created by actor and writer Linwood Boomer. He was prompted to write the series by friends and colleagues to draw on memories from his own crazy childhood.

The pilot episode was first aired in 1998 and starred 13-year old Frankie Muniz as the intellectually advanced genius. Despite bad reviews from test audiences the Fox studios decided to promote the show heavily and it’s premiere episode aired on 9th January 2000, in coveted slot between The Simpsons and The X Files. After it’s first showing ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ received 23 million viewers and became the most watched TV premiere in history.

In 2000 and 2001 the show won back-to-back Emmy’s for achievements in writing and directing with Frankie Muziz (Malcolm) also earning nominations for his role.
