On meeting Fran Walsh:
"There was this incredible, strikingly beautiful girl with this dark hair hanging down who was sort of sitting there taking script notes. I didn't have a clue who she was, but as someone who wasn't particularly interested in girls at that stage I thought she was really nice."

On King Kong:
There’s something incredibly tragic about Kong. You feel almost feel ashamed to be a human being when you see what happens to him. I mean he is ultimately a pure-heart.”

On himself:
“I think there’s still a little bit of that 9 year-old in me and I’m pretty happy.”

On his childhood ambitions:
“For a lot of my childhood, I didn't want to direct movies because I didn't really know what directing was. But I wanted to do special effects.”

“In every house when the curtains are drawn, there's a story going on and you never get to hear...You get the public side of things, the happy, smiling, social activities. But really, you know, you peel that layer away and what darkness dwells in the suburbs.”

On his films:
“Every one of my films is a film I’d love to go and see.”

“I love those filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Mike Leigh who use the same actors in film after film.”

On Frodo:
“I always regard Frodo as being an everyman character. In a way, Frodo is the audience of the film.”

On the Hobbit:
“I love the hobbit. I love Bilbo Baggins. I relate really well to Bilbo!”
