Tobey Maguire Biography

Born to young parents in 1975, Tobias Vincent Maguire spent his childhood moving between his mother’s house and those of his immediate family. Having lived in California for a while, he eventually found himself living in Oregon and Washington.

After being encouraged to try his hand at acting by his mother, he started to land work in television commercials and small bit parts in shows such as Roseanne and Blossom.

However, it was his role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1993 adaptation of Tobias Wolff's ‘This Boy's Life’ that convinced him that acting was indeed the job for him.

Aged 19, Tobey landed a part in ‘Empire Records’ alongside Liv Tyler and Rene Zellweger. Although not a major part, the experience of making the film led Tobey to take some time out to re-evaluate his life, before returning reinvigorated and hungry for work.

Over the next few years he starred in ‘Tales From The Whoop’, ‘Duke Of Groove’ and ‘Seduced By Murder’. As his profile began to rise, he was offered more challenging roles in Ang Lee’s ‘The Ice Storm’ and Woody Allen's ‘Deconstructing Harry’.

Tobey’s performance in ‘The Cider House Rules’ caught the attention of director Sam Raimi, who was looking for the right actor to take on the role of Spiderman. The film was a huge box office success and became one of the fastest films to make $100 million.

After slipping out of his spider suit, Tobey was next seen in Seabiscuit, the tale of a small horse who took on and beat the great War Admiral. With another hit on his hands, Tobey’s star was shining bright in Hollywood.

2003 proved to be a less successful year on a personal level when the young star was ordered to pay back $197,000 he'd been given by convicted financial advisor, Dana Giachetto. A number of other stars, including Cameron Diaz, were also caught up in this financial scandal. In addition to this, Tobey had become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

However, Tobey was quick to boucne back and the eagerly-awaited second Spiderman movie was another resounding success. He reprised the part for a third instalment in 2007.

Maguire married his long-time partner, jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, in September 2007, in Hawaii. The couple first met in 2003 while Maguire was filming Seabiscuit. They have a daughter named Ruby Sweetheart Maguire, born in 2006.
