- One of his trademarks is that he often includes references to his previous films.

- Was parodied in ‘South Park’ – episode ‘Butt Out’ – criticising his objection to smoking.

- Can be a scary director: During the filming of the train chase scene in ‘Stand By Me’ (1986), in order to make actors Wil Wheaton and Jerry O’Connell look frightened enough, he shouted at them until they cried, whereupon he re-filmed the scene, happy with the result.

- Twelve days into principal photography, he replaced Ted Griffin as director of ‘Rumor Has It’ (2005).
