In the face of inconclusive physical evidence, the character of the accused can often sway a jury.

When Brian Eftenoff stood trial for his wife's murder, jurors were confronted with contradictory claims about how she died. But one of the few things jurors could hold on to was how they felt about Brian Eftenoff's character.

In September of 1999, just hours after his wife's mysterious death, Brian Eftenoff was questioned by Phoenix police. His statements led Detective Joe Petrosino to believe that Brian may have been involved with Judi's death.

The facts of the night Judi died began unfolding with the County Medical Examiner's report of Judi's body. The examiner discovered numerous minor injuries that could be evidence of a beating. Even more intriguing, the examiner found injuries and bruises around her neck muscles, as if something was forced down her throat. Detective Petrosino became very suspicious of Brian's behaviour; he had started calling the police station every day to inquire about the investigation. He began speaking with neighbours and relatives, telling them that Judi had a cocaine problem that no body else knew about. When the toxicology report came back, Brian's remarks were confirmed. A gram of cocaine was found in Judi's bloodstream - a humongous amount of the drug for such a small woman like Judi.

Based on a variety of circumstantial physical evidence, Brian Eftenoff was arrested for the murder of his wife. This episode of American Justice gives viewers a chance to make their own decision about Brian's guilt or innocence, based on his own words - in a police interrogation video, a taped conversation between Brian and Det. Petrosino as well as a phone interview he granted with American Justice.
