The tales of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H) emerged from a book written by Dr. Richard Hornberger - using the pseudonym Richard Hooker.
The book was a fictional account of his years at the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Korea and he based the lead character, Hawkeye, on himself.

The original book soon became a movie directed by Robert Altman and starred Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould. The movie managed to cash in on anti-Vietnam feelings in the US and became a box-office smash. It went on to pick up an Oscar for Best Screenplay and actress Sally Kellerman received a nomination in the Best Actress category for her role as ‘Hotlips’.

Twentieth Century Fox were quick to see the potential of the film and optioned the rights for a television series.

The show revolved around a zany collective of doctors and nurses trapped in a bug infested camp in the middle of the Korean War. It managed to make war into comedy and was syndicate worldwide, making many of its stars into household names.

Gary Burghoff was the only actor from the film to transfer to the TV series and the star role of Hawkeye went to Alan Alda, who was initially reluctant to commit to a show that could have a long run.

The ‘long run’ lasted for a staggering 11 years and 251 episodes winning countless awards and accolades. The finale still remains one of the most watched television programmes ever.
