From Graceland to the Holy Land, “Schmelvis: Searching For The King’s Jewish Roots”, is an offbeat documentary about an unlikely subject - the real-life ancestry of the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley. Orthodox Jewish Elvis impersonator Dan Hartal and Rabbi Reuben Poupko travel on a bizarre odyssey to trace Elvis’ roots following up on a 1998 Wall Street Journal article, exposing the King’s improbable lineage. He travels to Memphis for the anniversary of Elvis’ death, to say the Jewish prayer for the dead over the King’s grave, and to spread the word that Elvis Presley, one of the greatest Christian icons of American pop culture, was Jewish. The result is an amusing and satirical portrait of pop culture, tolerance and identity.
