Weight Watchers filmography

It all started in a small Queens, New York living room back in 1961 with a group of six overweight women and the idea that obesity deserved company. Jean Nidetch's life is a rags-to-riches tale of an overweight housewife who launched an anti-fat grass roots campaign that evolved into Weight Watchers, the world's leading weight loss program. Today over 1 million people attend weekly meetings in 30 countries.

Weight Watchers had the good fortune to come along in the early 1960's when the fitness and self-help movements were set to take off. They also had Jean Nidetch, whose chutzpah and energy set the tone right from the very start. Jean was a suburban New York housewife and mother of two who struggled both physically and emotionally to gain control of her weight problem since childhood. Pills, hypnosis, and fad diets all failed leaving Jean Nidetch desperate but determined to be thin. When she called six overweight friends over to commiserate and to talk about their struggles something finally clicked.

By combining a sensible diet with group therapy meetings Jean Nidetch stumbled upon a formula for weight loss that was embraced by the masses. When she herself lost 72 pounds she had to tell the world. Jean Nidetch, who never spoke professionally in her life, travelled the globe and shared her secret to success with anyone who would listen. She became a cause celebrity and motivated thousands to follow in her footsteps and lose weight.

For the next 30 years, she made it her life's mission to help people lose weight. And although she never intended to make a penny, it made her wealthy beyond her wildest dreams. For nearly four decades now, Weight Watchers has kept up with America's ever changing eating habits and built a solid reputation as "the" industry leader in weight loss. The one thing that hasn't changed, since its humble beginnings in Jean Nidetch's Queens living room in 1961, is the caring and the commitment to helping people from all walks of life--lose weight sensibly and better their lives for the future.
