Born of Irish descent, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the second son of millionaire businessman and politician, Joseph P Kennedy, and his wife Rose.
Kennedy briefly attended Princeton and then Harvard. However, in 1941, Kennedy joined the US Navy. While on duty in the Pacific in 1943, the boat he commanded was sunk by the Japanese. Kennedy performed heroically, but injured his back and was discharged, as a result, in 1945.
In 1946, Kennedy ran successfully for a Boston seat in the US House of Representatives. As a congressman, he backed social legislation, but advocated a strongly anti-Communist foreign policy.
In 1952 Kennedy was elected as a Senator, and a year later he married socialite [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/130:0/Jackie_Kennedy.htm]Jacqueline Bouvier[/urlnew]. The couple had three children, one of whom died in infancy.
Unfortunately, Kennedy was often hospitalised with back ailments and was therefore inactive as a Senator. Critics observed that he did not oppose the McCarthy witch-hunts.
In 1956, Kennedy failed to win the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Thereafter, he set his sights on the presidency. In 1960, Kennedy ran a well-financed, highly organized campaign and was nominated.
Kennedy won the election by a narrow margin, and most of his domestic policies failed to pass. When advocates of racial justice gained credence, he moved belatedly to promote civil rights legislation. The president also took a strong anti-communist stance when he permitted a band of Cuban exiles, already armed and trained, to invade their homeland in April 1961. However the 'Bay of Pigs' invasion of Cuba proved to be an embarrassing failure.
Kennedy's chief adversary was Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev. In 1961, the Soviets erected a wall between East and West Berlin. Kennedy replied by reinforcing the Berlin garrison and increasing the Nation's military strength, including new efforts in outer space. Confronted by this reaction, Moscow relaxed its pressure in central Europe.
The stand-off in Berlin was followed by the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962, unquestionably the most tense confrontation of the era. During this period the Soviet Union sought to install nuclear missiles in Cuba which would bring the United States to within striking distance. An attack seemed possible and Kennedy ordered a blockade of shipments to Cuba. War appeared imminent until Khrushchev, sensing the futility of the situation, ordered the Soviet missile convoy to turn back at the 11th hour.

While driving in a motorcade through Dallas on 22nd November 1963, Kennedy was shot in the head and killed. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the crime, but was himself murdered two days later by Jack Ruby before Oswald could be put on trial.
The Warren Commission, set up to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald had acted alone in killing the president. However, the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded in 1979 that there may have been a conspiracy. The subject remains controversial today, with many theories about the assassination still being debated.
The assassination proved to be a defining moment in U.S. history due to its traumatic impact on the psyche of the nation and the ensuing political fallout, which continues to influence the temperament of American society. Many regarded President Kennedy as an icon of American hopes and aspirations; he continues to rate highly in public opinion rankings of former US presidents.
