Ken Livingstone filmography
Ken Livingstone was educated at Comprehensive School, and worked as a laboratory technician before training as a teacher.
He was a member of the Greater London Council from 1976, and its leader from 1981. He was largely responsible for The GLC's popular "Fares Fair" policy, which significantly cut the price of travel on London Transport.
After [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/163:0/Margaret_Thatcher.htm]Margaret Thatcher[/urlnew] abolished the GLC, Livingstone went on to become an MP for the Labour Party.
In 1999, Livingstone stood for nomination as the Labour Party candidate in the London mayoral elections. Despite much popular support, the Blairite Frank Dobson was selected.
Livingstone chose to stand as an independent candidate and was expelled from the Labour Party in 2000, but he beat Dobson, and all the other candidates, decisively in an incident-filled election, becoming the first modern elected Mayor of London.
One of the key points of conflict between Labour and Livingston has been the proposed partial privatisation of the London Underground. Livingstone had proposed that funds should be raised to improve the Tube infrastructure by a public bonds issue, as had been done in the case of the New York City Subway.
But Labour kept pushing their public-private partnership scheme, to which Livingstone was forced to concede, after he lost a legal challenge in July 2002.
Livingstone was also instrumental in introducing the London Congestion Charge, in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
He is often known as "Red Ken", and is famous for his predilection for keeping newts. He has written two books, 'If Voting Changed Anything They'd Abolish It', and 'Livingstone's Labour'.
Livingstone became a father for the first time at the age of 57.
He was reconciled with the Labour Party in 2004, and became their official candidate in the Mayoral elections that year, winning a second term in office comfortably.
