Alicia Keys filmography
Alicia grew up New York's inner city and, by the age of five she was already a musical prodigy.
Keys was born to an Irish-Italian mother, Terri Augello, and a Jamaican father, Craig Cook, in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan.
Terri was a paralegal and actress, but Keys was raised in a poor home in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Keys' parents separated during her early childhood, thus she was raised by her mother during her formative years. The two shared a one-room apartment, with Alicia sleeping on the couch.
Aged 16 she began studying at Columbia University, but music beckoned and she quickly left to follow her dream. She had already been writing songs since she was 14 and had several years of piano lessons to her credit.
In 1998, she signed with Arista Records, and wrote, produced and recorded her own albums. In 1999 she left Arista to join J Records, headed by legendary music boss Clive Davis.
She released her debut album ‘Songs in A Minor’ when she was just 19, and it went straight to number one and sold 5.6 million copies in the US.
Her single ‘Fallin’ was at the top spot for three weeks in the US alone. She went on to win a total of five Grammies with the album.
Her second album, ‘The Diary of Alicia Keys’, has gone four times platinum in the US, with sales of over five million worldwide. It’s also platinum in the UK and in Europe. Alicia was the biggest winner, with four Grammies at the 2005 Awards, next only to Ray Charles, and recently won seven Billboard Awards.
Alicia has also appeared on a number of film soundtracks, including ‘Shaft’ and ‘Men in Black’.
