Paula Abdul filmography

[h3]Abdul was born in San Fernando, California, to Harry Abdul, the owner of a sand and gravel business, and Lorraine Rykiss, a former concert pianist.[/h3]

She began taking dance lessons when she was eight. She then attended Van Nuys High School, where she was senior class president and head cheerleader. After graduating in 1980, she started college at Cal State-Northridge, studying TV and radio.

After joining the L.A. Lakers basketball team cheerleaders, she became head cheerleader/choreographer after only a few months, eventually dropping out of college to dance and choreograph full-time.

Having worked for both [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/933:0/Michael_Jackson.htm]Michael[/urlnew] and [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/1092:0/Janet_Jackson.htm]Janet Jackson[/urlnew], her dancing skills became much in demand and she went on to choreograph videos for [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/1780:0/Duran_Duran.htm]Duran Duran[/urlnew] and [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/1557:0/George_Michael.htm]George Michael[/urlnew], as well as working on the Tracy Ullman show.

Paula’s debut album, ‘Forever Your Girl’ became a worldwide hit thanks to the dance track ‘Straight Up’. A run of successful singles on both sides of the Atlantic led to album sales of over 7 million.

However, the follow up album, ‘Spellbound’, failed to set the charts alight and, during this time, she was sued by a former backing singer who claimed that she had provided the main vocals for the ‘Forever Your Girl’ album. Paula eventually won the case and bounced back with her third solo album, ‘Head Over Heels’ in 1995.

Paula married actor Emilio Estevez 1992 but the couple divorced in 1993. With her fame diminishing in the late '90s, she bounced back onto TV screens across America as a celebrity judge on the hugely successful ‘American Idol’ series. Sparring against fellow judge [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/1199:0/Simon_Cowell.htm]Simon Cowell[/urlnew], she became a firm favourite on the show.

In 2003, Corey Clark, a contestant on the show who was disqualified for not disclosing a prior arrest, alleged that Abdul has given him secret coaching whilst the couple were conducting an affair. Although Abdul denied the claims an inquiry was launched by the show’s producers.

More bad luck followed in 2005 when an LA court fined the star $1,100 and sentenced her to two years probation following a hit-and-run incident. However, thanks to her recent career revival, Paula plans to head back to the recording studio.
