[h3]Oasis began life as a quartet, fronted by Liam Gallagher – whilst brother Noel worked as guitar technician for the ‘Inspiral Carpets’. [/h3]

On his return to Manchester Noel joined his brother’s band on the condition that he had full control, becoming lead guitarist and songwriter – it was then that the band’s name ‘Oasis’ was conceived.

The band was signed by the head of Creation Records, Alan McGee, in 1994 having not even sent a single demo tape to any record label.

In spring that year ‘Supersonic’ entered the UK charts, followed by ‘Shakermaker’ in the summer. The band had their first major hit in the UK with the ballad 'Live Forever'.

The group's first album, 'Definitely Maybe', became the fastest-selling debut in British history, entering the charts at number one. Their second album '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?', released in October 1995, also shot to number one in the UK, becoming the fastest-selling album since [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/933:0/Michael_Jackson.htm]Michael Jackson's[/urlnew] ‘Bad’ in 1987.

Over the course of 1996, '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?' became the second-biggest British album in history, eclipsed only by [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/1515:0/The_Beatles.htm]The Beatles[/urlnew] 'Sgt Pepper' album. Oasis had arrived on the international stage.

In 1997 their next album, 'Be here now', was released, popular at first, it sold well both in the U.S. and UK. However, the album seemed to lack the longevity of previous albums and was panned by some critics and record buyers.

Following the release of 'Be Here Now', Oasis disappeared from the limelight, only releasing their B-sides album 'Masterplan' in 1998.

They spent the following year writing and recording 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants', which was released in 2000. They then toured again, before releasing the live album 'Familiar to Millions'.

Throughout 2001, Oasis divided their time between sessions for their fifth studio album and live shows around the world. The album, Heathen Chemistry, Oasis' first album with new members Andy Bell and Gem Archer, was released in July 2002. The album reached number one in the UK and number 23 in US, although critics gave it mixed reviews. The Liam-penned "Songbird", was Oasis' first single not written by Noel.

After the album's release, the band embarked on a successful world tour that was filled with incidents. In late summer 2002, whilst the band was on tour in the US, Noel, Bell and touring keyboardist Jay Darlington were involved in a car accident in Indianapolis. While none of the band members sustained any major injuries, some shows were cancelled as a result.

In December 2002, the latter half of the German leg of the band's European tour had to be postponed after Liam was arrested following a brawl at a Munich nightclub. The band had been drinking heavily and tests showed that Liam may have been using cocaine. Liam lost two front teeth and kicked a police officer in the ribs.

2005 saw the release of the band's sixth studio album, 'Don't Believe The Truth, which has been acclaimed as their best in 10 years. 'Don't Believe the Truth' charted in the U.S. and went to No.1 in the UK, quickly going double platinum. Both of the first two singles taken from the album, 'Lyla' and 'The Importance of being Idle' went straight in at No.1 in the UK.

Oasis released a compilation double album entitled Stop the Clocks in 2006. Though the band didn't want to release a compilation, their contract with Sony Music had just expired, forcing a release against the band's wishes.

Oasis are one of few British bands to break America. 'Definitely Maybe' went gold in the U.S. and on the strength of the single 'Wonderwall', 'Morning Glory' became a Top Ten success in the US, eventually being certified quintuple platinum.

Oasis continue to tour and sell-out gigs all over North America. It hasn’t, however, all been plain sailing. There are constant tensions in the group especially between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, who refuse to do joint interviews.

The siblings have a long history of bitter feuds and violent punch-ups. Noel briefly left the band at the end of a difficult American tour, but soon re-joined and the band headed back to England.

During 1996, the Gallagher’s confrontational relationship frequently made newspapers and gossip columns, particularly when they suddenly pulled out of their U.S. tour.

Liam is the more volatile personally having scuffles where ever he goes. Whether it’s assaulting photographers or being banned from the party island of Ibiza, Liam's name is rarely out of the press.

Oasis’ line up has changed over time, due to artistic differences. On the eve of the release of 'Some Might Say', drummer Tony McCaroll parted ways with the band, with Alan White taking his place. Noel apparently fired him as he didn't feel Tony was progressing musically with the rest of the band.

Then, as the band was recording their fourth album, in the summer of 1999, Bonehead left Oasis, claiming that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Oasis shot from obscurity to stardom, becoming one of Britain's most popular and critically acclaimed bands, being credited with the return of British guitar pop to the charts.
