What's it actually like to be a transvestite? If you are one, what does it tell you about everybody else?

There's something depressing about the way this subject has been treated on television in the past. On the one hand there are observational studies, with the cross-dressers themselves viewed from a caring but cautious distance, like shy, exotic creatures of the night peeping through the bracken.

On the other hand there's the long, baleful shadow of light entertainment, Carry On and panto. This film will be completely different: personal, disarmingly frank, witty, unapologetic, critical, paradoxical, politically incorrect, controversial and straight from the heart.

Grayson Perry will explore in a totally honest, unsparing way what it feels like to be a transvestite - the pain, humiliation and rejection you experience, but also the triumph, the joys of surrendering to erotic compulsion, the thrill of frills and the eyes of furtive men in car coats darting over your body.
