[h3]Sandra Dee was born Alexandra Cymboliak Zuck. [/h3]

Her mother had always envisioned a show business career for her daughter and would often lie about her age in order to get Sandy where she wanted to go, even enrolling her in school early so she could have a head start.

By the time that Dee was 12, she had successfully established herself as a model and soon moved on to TV commercials before turning to acting.

At 14, Dee took her first film role playing the youngest of four sisters in the film Until They Sail (1957). The new young star followed her debut by signing to two more films in 1958, The Reluctant Debutante and The Restless Years and went on to win a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer in the same year.

In 1959, Dee appeared in five productions. The films Gidget and A Summer Place were the two that stood out as being the most successful of the collection made.

Still only a teenager, in 1960, Dee married the well-known pop idol Bobby Darin. The husband and wife team appeared together in the film Come September in 1961 and Dee went on to make a further eight films in the years leading up to her divorce from Darin in 1967.

The scripts that Dee was offered after her marriage to Darin started to become increasingly lack-luster and gradually her film career began to dwindle.

Now no longer a teenage heart-throb, there was less demand for Dee to play the popular ‘daughter’ roles she’d become accustomed to and effectively at age 26, Dee’s career was over.

It wasn’t until the film Grease (1978) famously featured the song ‘Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee’ that her name once again become famous to a new generation.

Dee made her last film for the big screen, Lost, in 1983 before vanishing from the limelight once more. She died of kidney disease on 20th February 2005.

- Dee made her modeling debut in Girl Scouts Magazine.

- Dee suffered from anorexia for most of her life.

- As one of the most successful teenage movie stars of the 20th century, Dee was listed on the Quigley Publications Top Ten Money-Making Stars poll four years in a row, from 1960 through to 1963, achieving her personal highest ranking of #6 in 1961.

- Universal Studios concocted the name 'Sandra Dee' for her by shortening her first name and by using her stepfather's surname initial ‘D’ to sign vouchers.

- At the time of her death, she was survived by her son Dodd, her only child with Bobby Darin, and two granddaughters, Alexa and Olivia Darin.
