Wild parties, beautiful women and a never-ending supply of feel good drugs - all part of the "high life" enjoyed by master drug smuggler George Jung in the 1970s.
Handsome, charismatic, and adventurous, Jung, along with his partner Carlos Lehder, revolutionised the cocaine trade, making, then losing, tens of millions of dollars along the way.
In 1976, Jung began importing cocaine from Colombia into the United States via private airplanes, flying below radar range. By 1977, he and Lehder were bringing 800 kilos a month of pure product from the hills of Colombia to feed the seemingly insatiable American appetite for the elite recreational drug. His booming coke business, however, had a much darker side. Jung also helped fuel the meteoric ascent of the Colombian cartels - an alliance of drug lords that ruled with guns, brawn, and bloodlust.
But Jung's success was short-lived. By the 1980s, a new ‘smokeable’, inexpensive form of cocaine known as "crack" arrived on the American scene devastating inner city neighbourhoods around the country. In response, the United Stated launched a formidable anti-drug campaign aimed at smugglers and distributors.
In 1985 Jung was caught in a massive sting operation with three hundred kilos of cocaine and later testified against Lehder to secure his freedom from prison. But he just couldn't stay away from the smuggling business. In 1994 he was arrested again, for marijuana smuggling and was given a 22-year sentence at Fort Dix Correctional Institution in New Jersey where he remains today.
In True Crime Authors' "Blow, with Bruce Porter" the author recounts the life story of ultimate party-boy George Jung, tracing the rise of this small town Massachusetts kid who revolutionised the cocaine trade in America. It's a story that ranges from the seat-of-the-pants days of early drug running to the rise of Pablo Escobar and the Colombian cartels.
