It wasn't easy for Christian IX and Queen Louise (pictured) to marry off their youngest daughter, Thyra, as splendidly as Alexandra and Dagmar, but when the somewhat older, childless king of the Netherlands proposed marriage Queen Louise turned him down; she already had a favourite. Not only was the former crown prince of Hanover extremely rich, there was also a chance that he'd get his kingdom back again.

But there was also an unfortunate matter to take into consideration. At 17 Thyra became pregnant and had to go to Greece, where she had a baby girl in 1871. The baby was given up for adoption. Thyra's lover and the father of her child was Lieutenant Wilhelm Marcher, who killed himself in shame when Thyra was in Greece.

Not until seven years later was Thyra ready for marriage. Her betrothed was the former crown prince Ernst August of Hanover, the Duke of Cumberland. He was definitely not handsome but he was likeable, and he and Thyra had a good marriage. They built Schloss Cumberland in the Austrian mountain town of Gmunden, and their six children grew up there.

Thyra's two eldest sons died at the ages of sixteen and thirty-two, so it is from the youngest son, Ernst August, that the family now descends. Their descendants include Prince Ernst August of Hanover (who is married to Princess Caroline of Monaco), Prince Heinrich of Hanover, Princess Elisabeth Ysenburg und Büdingen, Duchess Donata Mecklenburg-Solodkoff, Constantine II of Greece, and Queen Sophia of Spain.

Christian IX's youngest son, Valdemar, did not share his elder brothers' ambition. He was offered the thrones of Bulgaria and Norway but turned them both down. He married the carefree French Princess Marie of Orléans, and they lived in Det Gule Palae (the yellow palace), Copenhagen. Valdemar loved life at sea and was often away for a long time. Meanwhile Marie aroused attention in Denmark with her eccentricities.

She had an anchor tattooed on one shoulder, she rode a bull in Bernstorff Park, her dogs were so well-fed that they rolled rather than walked, and as an honorary fire chief she insisted on being informed of any fires in Copenhagen. While hosting a dinner party she once had her team hitched up, exchanged her diadem for a fireman's helmet, and raced off to help put out a fire.

Valdemar and Marie had five children, referred to by the rest of the family as "the naughty kids from the Yellow Palace" - for good reason! Aage, Axel, Erik, Viggo, and Margrethe could never resist the prospect of family fun and games.

Descendants include Queen Anne of Romania, Count Flemming of Rosenborg, and Count Valdemar of Rosenborg.
