When Christine and Heidi boarded the Greek ferry the Express Samina they noticed that the lifeboats were old and crumbling and that the captain was not at the helm. Shortly before docking at the island of Paros, the ferry hit the well-lit giant twin rocks known as the Gates of Paros. The ferry began to sink almost immediately and chaos reined, as the crew abandoned ship leaving the passengers to fend for themselves. By going to the ship's prow away from the panicking crowd, the two women were able to enter a lifeboat and then began a terrifying ordeal as the old and rotten vessel battled fifteen foot swells to get to land.
