Not that we might ever be able to explain, only that we might find a way to understand how someone, who seemingly functions in other areas of their lives, might lose their balance enough to commit the unthinkable in a passionate rage. Darlene Ellis' story is one of heartache and suffering. A marriage plagued by addiction and abuse from a man she idolised.

Alcohol addiction had taken over her husband's life for years. The abuse, both verbal and physical, came hand in hand with it. Having managed to stay sober for seven years, he eventually returned to his old ways and with it came abuse that was worse than ever before.

The abuse was not only directed at Darlene but also at their young daughter Brittany. He punched holes in walls, tried to choke his own daughter and drank from morning to night. Brittany, by her own admission, was terrified of her father.

In her desperation and misery, Darlene attempted suicide and even bought a gun that she intended to use on herself. Instead, it was turned on her violent drunken husband, during another frightening argument on New Years Eve 2005.

Knowing she would be killed if she did not kill him, Darlene fired one fatal shot at her husband's head. Would a jury of her peers believe she acted in self defence or could she really be facing the prospect of life imprisonment?
