While Antonio and Kathleen Messina were married with two children, Kathleen had a torrid, and what many described as bizarre, 10-month affair with Allen Essner.

On 6th July 1997 Essner drew a shotgun and slayed Antonio Messina but by all accounts it seemed that Kathleen had been the driving force behind the killing.
