Laurence and Andrew Wachowski are one of Hollywood’s most successful writer, producer and director teams. They are most famous for creating ‘The Matrix’ (1999, 2003) trilogy of films but the duo’s credits also include ‘Bound’ (1996), ‘V for Vendetta’ (2006), ‘The Animatrix’ (2003) and ‘Speed Racer’ (2008), a live-action adaptation of the 1960’s Japanese Manga comic of the same name.
Born in Chicago, Ilinois in 1967, the Wachowski Brothers were born to a Polish-American family. They both graduated from Whitney Young High School in 1983 and 1985 respectively and then separated to further their education at different colleges. Andy attended Emerson College in Boston and Larry went to Bard College in New York, however after 2 years they both became disilusioned with college education and dropped out. Together they went on to build their own carpentry business and began writing comics strips for Marvel and Epic comics in their spare time.
Whilst at Marvel and Epic the brothers co-wrote a screenplay named “Assasins” which Warner Bros bought and developed into a feature film starring Hollywood heavyweights [urlnew=/biography_home/279:0/Antonio_Banderas.htm]Antonio Banderas[/urlnew] and [urlnew=/biography_home/273:0/Sylvester_Stallone.htm]Sylvester Stallone[/urlnew].
In 1996 The Wachowski brothers went on to co-write, co-direct and co-produce the critically acclaimed film ‘Bound’. The noir crime thriller won several awards including the Grand Jury Award - Honourable Mention at LA Outfest, an International Fantasy Film Award at Fantasporto and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film. Although ‘Bound’ was the film which brought the brothers to the attention of the film industry it was their next film, ‘The Matrix’, which propelled them to the Hollywood A-list of film producers and directors.
‘The Matrix’ starred [urlnew=/biography_home/795:0/Keanu_Reeves.htm]Keanu Reeves[/urlnew] and Laurence Fishburne and was a never seen before combination of sci-fi, action and martial arts flicks. The brothers had planned the Matrix as a trilogy of films and in 2003 ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘Matrix Revolutions’ were released followed by an animated series called ‘The Animatrix’, of which the brothers produced and wrote four of the nine shorts.
In 2008 the Wachowski brothers released ‘Speed Racer’ was released. Based on the 1960’s Japanese Manga comic of the same name, the film was written and and directed by the duo and starred Emile Hirsh, Christina Ricci, [urlnew=/biography_home/14:0/Susan_Sarandon.htm]Susan Sarandon[/urlnew] and John Goodman.
