Paul Newman filmography
Paul Newman, the 1960s heartthrob, and man credited with the bluest eyes in Hollywood, has successfully weathered more than 50 years in showbiz and, as an actor, has learnt to grow old gracefully.
Newman grew up in an affluent suburb of Cleveland, where his parents ran a sports supply shop. A bright, sporty boy at school, Newman was often involved in theatre productions. Upon graduation, Newman hoped to become a Navy pilot, but his blue eyes were actually blind to colour and, for the duration of WW2, he had to be content with being a radio operator.
Demobbed in 1946, Newman enrolled at Kenyon College and then at Yale Drama School, after a year of which he moved on to New York, to attended the New York Actors Studio which taught ‘method acting’, a new style of acting used by [urlnew=http://www.thebiographychannel.co.uk/biography_home/719:0/Marlon_Brando.htm]Marlon Brando[/urlnew].
Classically handsome and witty, Newman had little trouble finding work in TV and on stage. In 1953, he was spotted by Warner Bros and made his debut in 'The Silver Chalice'. Newman was so appalled by his own performance in this costume epic, he took out a full page ad in a trade paper to apologise to any one unfortunate enough to see the flop.
Then, as boxer Rocky Graziano, in 'Somebody Up There Likes Me', Newman made the critics rave and stardom was assured. Film after film was a box office hit.
In 1968, Newman directed his wife Joanne Woodward in 'Rachel, Rachel' which was nominated for an Oscar. He won his own Oscar for best actor as an aging pool shark in 'The Colour of Money' (1986).
Although nearly 80, Newman continues to be cast as a lead actor.
In an alternative guise as a philanthropist, Newman founded a food production company which has earned more than $100 million, all of which has been donated to charity.
