Dennis Quaid
birth place:
Houston, Texas, USA
Born and raised in Texas, Dennis Quaid followed in the shadow of his older brother Randy, beginning to act in high school productions and later at the University of Houston. Success in a 1974 college production of 'Bus Stop' led him to drop out and head to L.A. With his rugged good looks and well-defined physique, Quaid soon found himself in demand. His first feature role was as one of a group of friends helping Richard Thomas cope with the death of his idol James Dean, in James Bridges' '9/30/55', but it was his portrayal of the frustrated Midwestern teenager in 'Breaking Away' that brought Dennis to the attention of Hollywood. His subsequent career has been a rollercoaster ride of impressive hits and dismal failures.
1980’s highlights include 'The Long Riders', alongside brother Randy, and his cocksure astronaut Gordon Cooper in 'The Right Stuff'. These roles allowed the charismatic actor a chance to demonstrate just how good he could be, but substandard fare like 'G.O.R.P.' and 'Jaws 3-D' didn’t help his career. He received a much-needed boost in Jim McBride’s 'The Big Easy', with his excellent turn as a Louisiana detective. Relaxed and sporting a Cajun accent, the actor was sexy and swaggeringly charming and had palpable onscreen chemistry with co-star Ellen Barkin.
Off-screen, the actor was battling an addiction to cocaine and, following his turn as a roguishly charming cad in 'Postcards From the Edge', he underwent treatment for substance abuse.
Following his self-imposed hiatus, 'Wyatt Earp' also bombed at the box office, although reviewers singled out Quaid's performance, for which he lost 40 pounds to play the tubercular Earp. He was back to speed as the charming ne'er-do-well husband of Julia Roberts in 'Something to Talk About', and brought a level of surprising believability to his turn as a medieval knight in 'Dragonheart'. Quaid continued in more family fare, Disney's remake of 'The Parent Trap'.
The surprise hit 'The Rookie', about a baseball coach who tries out for the Major Leagues and becomes the league's oldest rookie, saw a welcome return to form. He next appeared with Julianne Moore in the intense drama 'Far From Heaven'. Set in 1950’s Connecticut, the film explored the tensions within marriages during that time and the racial issues of the day, and Quaid was universally praised for his family man who is secretly homosexual, which makes him neglectful, abusive and alcoholic. His most recent outing was as Jack Hall in the disaster epic 'The Day After Tomorrow'.
