born:
17-09-1973
birth place:
Chicago, Illinois
Anastacia Lyn Newkirk was born into a show business family thanks to her singer father and her mother who worked in musical theatre on Broadway.
Having moved from Chicago to New York when she was a teenager, Anastacia joined the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.
The young Anastacia battled against Crohn's disease to develop a career in dance and can be spotted in the early Salt-N-Pepa videos ‘Everybody Get Up’ and ‘Twist and Shout’.
Having made it to the final of an MTV talent show in 1999, Anastacia succeeded in drawing attention to her unique voice from all the right places.
Signing up to an off-shoot of Epic records, she released her debut album ‘Not That Kind’ in 2000. Thanks to the worldwide hit ‘I'm Outta Love’, the album became an international bestseller, although success within the US would never match up to achievements abroad.
Her appearance alongside
Shakira,
Cher and
Celine Dion for a VH1's Divas Live in 2002 helped awaken a US fan base and the 2002 release of 'Freak Of Nature' helped push her records sales passed the 20 million mark.
Whilst her career was going from strength to strength, Anastacia discovered she had breast cancer in 2003 and underwent immediate treatment. Following a brief period of recovery, during which time she set up a Breast Cancer research fund, she returned to the studio to begin work on her self-titled ‘Anastacia’ album.
The first single to be lifted from the album, ‘Left Outside Alone’, showcased a rockier sound and the album topped the charts across Europe. However, the album was eventually denied a US release due a lack of airplay support from radio stations.
2005 saw a ‘Best Of’ compilation that rounded up all the hits alongside new tracks that included a duet with Italian heartthrob, Eros Ramazzotti. The DVD ‘Anastacia: Live at Last’ was released in 2006 and Anastacia has now gone done the fragrance route with her ‘Resurrection’ scent.
