Corey Haim
born:
23-12-1971
birth place:
Toronto, Canada
Corey Ian Haim was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Israeli-born mother Judy and Canadien father Bernie. During his childhood, Haim was known to be painfully shy and his mother decided a good way to overcome this would be to enroll him in acting lessons.
Haim, however, was not bitten by the acting bug and found he enjoyed more traditional boy-ish hobbies, such as ice hockey and comic books, rather than the joys of Macbeth. It wasn’t until Haim’s older sister Carole began auditioning for acting roles that in typical sibling jealousy, he decided he would put his skills to the test and give it a shot himself.
Haim began acting seriously just after his eleventh birthday and for four years was seen as Larry in the Canadian comedy series The Edison Twins. On the big screen, Haim starred in Firstborn in 1984, which featured the rising stars
Sarah Jessica Parker and
Robert Downey Jr.

Earning a name for himself as a talented child actor, Haim went on to further success in his breakthrough film Lucas (1986), alongside Winona Ryder and
Charlie Sheen.
Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys in 1987 shot Haim into the international spotlight alongside talented actors, such as
Kiefer Sutherland. The film attracted a cult fan base worldwide and it was on set that Haim met fellow child actor
Corey Feldman, with whom he would develop a long-lasting friendship and acting partnership.
The two Coreys became a popular on screen collaboration, with the pair meeting again in 1989, when Haim appeared in the film Dream a Little Dream. That same year Haim released a self-promotional documentary entitled Corey Haim: Me, Myself, and I, in which he is shown discussing his career and ambitions. Sadly the documentary may have come a tad too early to predict any long-lasting success though.
It would seem Haim’s career had peaked as early as 1990, with the majority of his films such as The Double O Kid and Oh and What a Night skipping cinema release and going straight to the video shelf. With his career in the freefall, Haim turned to drink and drugs. He is believed to have shocked doctors with the vast concoction of drugs he consumed at his worst times in the late 1980s. Quoted as saying he took “about 85” valium tablets a day, Haim attempted rehab 15 times - the first visit being in 1989 before he reportedly suffered a stroke in 2001. Apparently Haim slipped into a coma briefly, after being admitted to hospital, but made a full recovery and was discharged. Rumours circulated that he did not have any health insurance, which is why he had to leave hospital earlier than planned.
With an uncertain income due to a lack of success, Haim’s lifestyle hit him hard in the pocket. In 1997 he was forced to file for bankruptcy with over $100,000 of debt. His listed assets included a 10-year-old BMW, $100 and royalties valued at $7,500.
