born: 04-10-1941
birth place: New Orleans, USA

Anne Rice was born Howard Allen O'Brien, named after her father Howard, but on her first day of school, she told the nuns her name was Anne, and it has been Anne ever since.

Anne was the second of four daughters. Her mother Katherine died when Anne was fourteen. Shortly after, her father remarried and moved the family to Richardson, Texas.

At High School, Anne met Stan Rice. Although they went to different colleges, they married in October 1961 and moved to San Francisco together. Stan taught and wrote poetry, and Anne wrote 'Interview with the Vampire', a short story that would one day change her life forever. In September 1966, the couple had a baby girl, Michele.

Sadly, in 1970, Michele was diagnosed with leukaemia. She died two years later. The next few years were difficult, but Anne continued to write, expanding 'Interview with the Vampire' into a novel.

The novel was published in 1976 by Knopf, and Paramount paid Anne a large sum for the film rights. With this money the Rices were able to travel to Europe and Egypt. In 1977 they had a son, Christopher.

The family settled in New Orleans, which forms the background against which most of her stories take place. Her many horror stories are often about vampires, mummies and witches.

Her works have been a major influence on the Goth youth subculture, and she has published several works with sado-masochistic themes.

In 1994, Neil Jordan directed a film version of 'Interview with the Vampire', starring Tom Cruise as Lestat, Brad Pitt as Louis and Antonio Banderas as Armand.
