Biography

Cameron Crowe
born: 13-07-1957
birth place: Palm Springs, CA, USA

American rock journalist, screenwriter and director Cameron Crowe was brought up in San Diego, beginning his journalistic career aged 15.

Writing for top magazines such as ‘The Los Angeles Times’, ‘Playboy’ and ‘Creem’, he became contributing editor at ‘Rolling Stone’ when he was just 16. Interviewing such legends as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton, he was promoted to associate editor.

After leaving it all, to return to high school and research a book on adolescent life, he published the book ‘Fast Times At Ridgemont High’, in 1981, adapting it into a screenplay, the film of which emerged in 1982.

The film,'Almost Famous', featuring such emergent talent as Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sean Penn, was a great success, winning Crowe a Best Screen Adaptation award from the Writers’ Guild of America.

Later in the decade, Crowe made his directorial debut with ‘Say Anything...’, another tale of adolescence that transcended the tired teen movie clichés.

Moving on to young adults, his next film, ‘Singles’ (1992), set in Seattle, featured Bridget Fonda, Kyra Sedgwick and Matt Dillon.

With ‘Jerry Maguire’ (1996), Crowe’s work matured and, thanks to the presence of Tom Cruise, became a massive hit, and won both Cruise and Crowe Oscar nominations, for acting and screenplay respectively. It also won best supporting actor for Cuba Goodng Jr.
Crowe came back in 2000, with a semi-autobiographical piece which finally came to be called ‘Almost Famous’, set in the 1970s rock scene. With Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, it won awards for Best Film Comedy at the Golden Globes and a Best Original Screenplay.

During the late 1990s, Crowe had also researched and published ‘Conversations With Wilder’, a series of interviews with the legendary filmmaker, Billy Wilder.

Adapting the Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar's ‘Abre Los Ojos’ as 'Vanilla Sky' in 2001, Crowe once again collaborated with Tom Cruise, who played the lead.
