Second Wind Wonders

Take That

First formed: 1990
Split: 1996
Reason for re-forming and when: When an ITV documentary ‘Take That: For The Record’ aired in 2005, the sighs of nostalgia could be heard across many a living room in the UK. After an official press conference to put paid to rumours that Robbie Williams may be re-joining them, the four embarked on a three month tour. The comeback bait was taken and a year later, the group has signed a new record deal said to be worth £3 million - with their new album, Beautiful World, shifting some 1.5 million copies alone in the UK.

Spice Girls

First formed: 1994
Split: 2000
Reason for re-forming and when: One thing you can give the girls credit for is that most of them have been busy since their split in 2000. A certain Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, is credited for the most newspaper inches thanks to her general habit of changing her skin-tight ensembles every four seconds for the paparazzi. Now that four out of five of the girls are mums, perhaps their hormones are going wild? After years of gossip that they may or may not get back together, the reunion was finally confirmed in June 2007. Their world tour kicked off in December and they’re now gracing our screens in Tesco’s adverts.

Boyzone

First formed: 1993
Split: 2000
Reason for re-forming and when: With Boyzone ‘the next generation’ (aka Westlife) to keep the chirrupy teen fans happily singing cover hits for the past six years or so, it seemed there was no real reason for Boyzone to get back together. Yet, with the whiff of Take That’s recent success dangling in front of them, the challenge was too hard to ignore. Next year, the Irish crooners will be embarking on a UK tour for the first time in seven years and yet another greatest hits CD will be hitting the shelves.

All Saints

First formed: 1996
Split: 2001
Reason for re-forming and when: After an acrimonious split in 2001 and a minor applause for the Appleton sisters on their sibling singing solo project, the four girls decided to reform in 2006 in the hope they’d capture another ‘Never Ever’ fan base. Times have changed in the five years since the band went their separate ways though and their comeback single Rock Steady failed to relight anyone’s fire - with the accompanying album only just hitting the Top 40.

Led Zeppelin

First formed: 1968
Split: 1980
Reason for re-forming and when: After several pseudo reunions since the 1980s, the legendary rockers made the headlines in December 2007 after a massive concert at the 02 Arena for what was supposed to be a one-off gig. The reason behind the reformation was a tribute to the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, but only time will now tell if the group have rediscovered their taste for live performing and fans should watch this space for a new album in the next year.

Sex Pistols

First formed: 1975
Split: 1978
Reason for re-forming and when: Following in The Police’s footsteps, The Sex Pistols announced that instead of having a tea party to commemorate 30 years since the release of Never Mind The Bollocks, what the heck, they might as well reawaken that punk rock feeling and play a gig. When Virgin Records decided to release a special edition of the classic 70s iconic album in July, the original line up of Rotten, Jones, Matlock and Crook followed up the anniversary hype with seven live shows in London and Manchester to celebrate. Having been bitten with the bug again, The Sex Pistols will be headlining the Isle of Wight Festival in 2008.

Thankfully for the sake of those of us quite happy to pack up our copycat parka jackets, combat trousers and Union jack dresses for good, some cult bands know when enough is enough - Abba reportedly turned down a $1bn (£690m) offer in 2000, with Benny Andersson telling a Swedish newspaper: "It is a hell of a lot of money to say no to, but we decided it wasn't for us."
