Little Britain in Hollywood...

Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton’s style and porcelain English rose looks typically shy away from standard red carpet glamour. Following suit, Swinton’s role choices are known to be unpredictable and she tends to shun most A-list blockbuster big budget films for the more quirksome and edgy.

Yet after playing the somewhat corrupt Angel Gabriel with Keanu Reeves in 2005’s Constantine, Swinton’s appeal soon began to leak into the mainstream. Sitting sleigh high as the villainous white witch in the smash hit Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was Swinton’s proper breakthrough stateside and 2008 has confirmed this with her Best Supporting Actress win, at both BAFTA and the Academy Awards for her part in Michael Clayton.

James McAvoy
Scores of ladies love to swoon at Mr McAvoy and frankly, who can blame them? He captured the British public’s heart as the hapless Steve in Channel 4’s Shameless, but it wasn’t long before he waved goodbye to the TV screen and hello to a king size Winnebago in Hollywood.

McAvoy has been on a roll internationally with lead parts in studio successes such as Chronicles of Narnia, The Last King of Scotland and Becoming Jane under his belt.

Teaming up with fellow Brit pin-up Keira Knightley has most recently worked the Scot’s magic in notching up critical acclaim for the much hyped film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel, Atonement. Sadly, it looks like McAvoy won’t be popping back on our screens in Shameless anytime soon.

Keira Knightley
Bearing a strong resemblance to Natalie Portman can’t be too tough on your ego. Imagine being cast as the ugly bald girl or the girl with huge ears and then trying to sashay the red carpet with your head high, hoping the pap’s flashes don’t magnify that large spot on your nose?

For Keira Knightley though, playing Portman’s Queen Amidala body double in Star Wars Episode I wasn’t a bad start to her acting career age 14.

A breakthrough part in Bend It Like Beckham in 2002 put her face on magazines covers internationally and its success raised Knightley’s profile enough to land her a lead role in the Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster trilogy.

Intelligent and beautiful, Knightley won many fans in the US and with an Oscar nomination and BAFTA buzz trailing after her at the tender age of 22, this one will inevitably go far to fly the British flag for a long while yet.

Orlando Bloom
Lucky Orlando Bloom managed to step straight out of drama school into the elfish blonde wig of Leglolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Anyone lucky enough to grace their CVs with a part in Jackson’s epic films immediately felt the fame spotlight head-on and Bloom was no exception.

Bloom’s penchant for long film shoots is evident from his swash-buckling antics in yet another big-budget trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean, alongside fellow Brit success, Keira Knightley.

With parts in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down and Troy, Bloom has certainly cracked international success in style.
