Little Britain in Hollywood...
Jude Law
A relative veteran, Law took the states by storm in 2000 when he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for The Talented Mr Ripley.
Better known on his home shores for his string of alleged marital and extra marital dalliances, the Hollywood gang seemed to take more notice of his acting ability, with well-received parts in films such as Closer, Enemy at the Gates and The Aviator under his belt.
Director Anthony Minghella seems to have been Law’s lucky charm too as he received his second Oscar Nomination in 2003 for his part in Cold Mountain.
Paul Bettany
Paul Bettany’s acting career began on the boards in London’s west end and he went on to star in several forgettable TV mini series following that.
It wasn’t until he hit the screens in 2001 with A Knight’s Tale that Bettany’s name first became batted about over the shores. The big Hollywood production worked wonders in helping him crack the US market and soon he was starring in a plethora of high-profile roles in films such as Wimbledon and The Da Vinci Code.
Bettany has even managed to bag himself an actress wife in the process, the lucky Jennifer Connelly, who he’d met on the set of A Beautiful Mind. Bettany now seems to be living the American dream, making his new home in Brooklyn rather than the gloom of London.
Christian Bale
Christian Bale technically made his impact in Hollywood aged 13 in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning Empire of the Sun.
Not one to let early fame fever go to his head, Bale has more recently been a notable presence across the pond thanks to acquiring the keys to the Batmobile in Christopher Nolan’s, Batman Begins.
Also teamed with Nolan, Bale has starred in hits such The Prestige and 3:10 to Yuma and will be donning the bat suit once again for The Dark Knight which is released later in 2008. Bale’s status in America is so high that it’s rare for him to play a native English role and many people think he is in fact American. Thankfully, over here in Blighty we can happily claim the Welshman as one of our own.
Ewan McGregor
Ah, Ewan McGregor. Stalwart of popular British flicks, McGregor’s career in Hollywood began with Moulin Rouge in 2001. Proving he wasn’t just a pretty face in lending his voice to many of the musical numbers, McGregor has put his immense talent to many more international hits, most notably in the recent Star Wars films.
Playing the younger Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars trilogy isn’t a film role to take lightly, especially when they make a plastic doll of you so it is clear that McGregor has come a long way since the days of Trainspotting. Back then, Hollywood was clueless of the kilt-wearing crumpet but now the multi-faceted McGregor has proved he is one of the most successful actors ever to leave these shores.
