Agyness Versus Kate
While the motivations behind Pete Doherty famously terming Kate Moss a ‘nasty old rag’ are dubious – he did parody their relationship to the Vietnam War after all – there were nevertheless some prophetic undertones to his caustic verbatim.
Sure Kate Moss might rank as Forbes second highest paid supermodel and, as evidenced by her recent birthday celebrations, her command of attire can still send Topshop buyers into a supply frenzy. But at age 34, a mother of one, the curtain seems to be closing on Ms Moss’ lead role on the fashion stage and in her place Agyness Deyn has entered.

The Northern blonde, who once worked at a chip shop, has already usurped Kate Moss as the face of Brit fashion house Burberry. More telling still, Deyn knocked Moss off the top spot in Tatler magazine’s annual best-dressed list this month, thus depriving Moss of a crown she has been sporting for the past two years. Said Tatler of Deyn: "Whether she's sipping chai at the Russian Tea Rooms in Primrose Hill or kicking back at Henry Holland's studio. She's fash-fabulous... Rockin'."
Deyn’s eclectic, playful style and fresh face first came on the scene in 2006, when she starred on the cover of Italian Vogue. Just a year later, she was named Model of the Year by the British Fashion council. Fast forward to 2008 and Deyn has a Mulberry handbag named after her - the Agyness bag. She has featured on the cover of Time magazine and Zara have ordered mannequins in her image. Not bad for a girl of 25.
Of course pulling off a ripped gown with such aplomb, as Kate Moss did at the V&A Golden Age of Couture this autumn, takes skill and Deyn has yet to be tested in the fashion quick-fix department. But with Moss’ visage appearing more tired by the day, not to mention lifestyle choices which are dubious at best, Agyness Deyn really is the model of the moment.
