Hollywood's Drama Queens

Mariah Carey
Date of Birth: 27 March, 1970
Occupation: Singer

Famed for her ability to hit the highest notes, Mariah Carey’s vocal chords seem most flexed when making excessive requests to all those who serve her. If reports are to be believed, Carey once returned her Mercedes limo because the vanity mirrors were too small; she kept a crowd waiting for over an hour at an awards ceremony because she broke a nail; and she refused to climb a short flight of steps onto stage, reasoning ‘I don’t do stairs.’ The singer kept a low profile from 2002, after an uncomfortably publicised emotional breakdown and dismissal from her record label. But the release of her best-selling album ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ in 2005 saw a return to old school Mariah. Most noteworthy was her 2007 appearance at the CBS Studios in New York, when in full view of the audience, she summoned one of her assistants to do the undesirable task of whipping her sweaty upper lip and chin. In justification of these dramatics, Mariah Carey has remarked: “I know I can be diva-ish sometimes but I have to be in control. The nature of my life, the nature of what I do, is divadom, it really is.”

Paris Hilton
Date of Birth: 17 February, 1981
Occupation: Professional heiress

From day one Paris Hilton has been a tabloid junky’s dream. Heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune, it was not her genetic good luck that propelled her into the public eye, but her cheek-blushing sex tape. Since then, Miss Hilton has been a tour de force. The queen of the Los Angeles party scene, Paris is constantly pictured pouting on the red carpet, surrounded by a steady crew of sycophants. Behind the scenes however, things are far less harmonious, with reports constantly leaking that the heiress has fallen out with one person or other. The most high profile of her feuds was that with her ‘Simple Life’ co-star Nicole Richie. The Fox reality TV series premiered in 2003 and the pair appeared inseparable. However, by the end of the third season, the show was cancelled by Fox after a dispute between the two broke out. Paris Hilton dramatically lamented: "It's no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends. Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it." Despite the pairs’ icy relationship recently thawing, the two have not reverted back to Best Bud status, as evidenced by Hilton’s televised quest for a new one, entitled ‘Paris Hilton’s New BFF’.

Elizabeth Taylor
Date of Birth: 27 February, 1932
Occupation: Actress

Elizabeth Taylor first appeared in a motion picture at the age of nine and by the time she reached twelve, she had gained world wide notoriety for her role as Velvet Brown in the movie ‘Motion Brown’. Within years though it had become apparent that for Elizabeth Taylor, drama would not be confined to the silver screen. Despite winning two leading Actress Oscars, Taylor’s thespian achievements became dwarfed by her off-screen action. Most notable was her fickle attitude towards marriage. First tying the knot age 18, Taylor was not satisfied like most mere mortals with one husband, but went on to marry eight times. She quickly gained the name ‘Scarlett Woman,’ an offensive label both her and twice husband Richard Burton avidly refuted. The drama of these divorces clearly took their toll; by 1983, Elizabeth Taylor was crowned the first celebrity to publicly enter rehab. Blaming back pain for her addiction to painkillers and sleeping pills, the blue-eyed beauty attended the Betty Ford Clinic twice during the 1980s. Apparently old age has not calmed the diva – Taylor currently lives in Los Angeles with constant companion Jason Winters and as late as April 2008, was rushed to hospital after mixing prescription drugs with alcohol.
