Princess Diana and Charles
This royal couple certainly gave their guests the royal treatment. Married in St Pauls Cathedral on 29th July 1981, the invited congregation of 3,500 didn’t have to worry about taking time off work, since a national holiday was created to honour the event instead. Arriving at Church in a glass coach, Diana made the three-and-a-half minute walk up the aisle with 25 ft worth of antique lace trailing behind her and an estimated global TV audience of 750 million watching her. This made it one of the most popular programmes ever broadcast. Nice.

“It was so great – such a fun wedding,” gushed wedding guest Mario Lopez in an interview given back in 2007. “It’s been one event after another. I’m tired!” Indeed, for the glitterati of Hollywood, changing their postcode to a 17th century castle on the outskirts of Paris for a few days was never likely to disappoint. One of the main perks of the extravagent wedding were the gifts given to the female guests - rather than simply staring at the sparkles on the bride, the women attendees were provided their own piece of bling to ogle over too, in the form of Van Cleef gold and pearl bracelets.
