'Get Smart' Film Review

Although fans of the original series may have had their fears, this film gets a smart blend of comedy, drama and homage to the original series just right, resulting in a perfectly capable, laugh out loud comedy caper.

This Australian reviewer has learned that the English have largely grown up ignorant of the joys of Mel Brooks' original 1960's spy spoof TV series Get Smart. This deprivation is certainly to the loss of the nation, but Warner Bros has heroically swept in to save the day with their new comedy. Starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dawyne 'don't call me The Rock' Johnson and Alan Arkin, with a most welcome supporting role from beloved Heroes star Masi Oka playing, well, essentially Hiro, the film certainly had its London premiere audience stunned when Carel, Hathaway, Johnson and director Peter Segal turned up on the stage. The special arrivals had been delayed by London's most unwelcoming summer weather, yet Segal cheerfully announced that the film had just passed the $100,000,000 box office earnings in the US - though dryly noting this to be equivalent to about £4 in the UK.
