There's an argument of near-national importance raging across the office: is Robert Downey Jr the best thing since sliced bread, or another drug addicted drop? Even worse than those with the latter opinion are those espousing ambivalence. We ask - how can this be?

So we're out to prove the naysayers wrong, and the evidence in defence of RDJ being in fact far superior to sliced bread begins with the new 'Tropic Thunder' trailer. The film, set for a 16th September release, is about a war film being shot in a war zone and stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr as an Australian actor playing an African American soldier:

'I know who I am. I'm a dude, playing a dude, pretending to be another dude'.

Then there's 'Chaplin' (1992), in which Downey Jr turns out an extraordinary performance as - you guessed it - Charlie Chaplin. And don't forget Ally McBeal, where many of us first fell in love with him, prior to his rather unfortunate subsequent firing after a second drug related arrest.

But it was this late 90's period of drug induced darkness which landed Downey Jr his defining role as Tony Stark in Marvel's classy comic adaptation of 'Iron Man' (2008). Need we say more?

Well, yes, because we can. Our hero, along with returning director Jon Favreau, has not only signed on for 'Iron Man II', slated for an April 2010 release, but has apparently been given a £100,000 Bentley from as a grateful studio reward for the staggering success of the first film in the new franchise. We only sent flowers.

Downey Jnr has also just signed on to play Sherlock Holmes in a Guy Richie filmed feature - but wait, it gets better. Well, stranger. Because Sacha Baron Cohen has also signed on as Sherlock Holmes, only his is a comedy piece with co-stars Judd Apatow and Will Ferrell. Two Holmes films at once? We always thought Hollywood worked in strange ways, and here's yet more evidence that lightning can in fact strike in the same place twice.

To wind up the Robert Downey Jr theme, we have one last card to play. He's lovely to look at. See, look here.
