If you’ve ever entertained the notion of skydiving, save yourself the money, trouble and a perfectly good pair of underwear with a ticket to ‘The Dark Knight’ at IMAX.
We of the audience gasped audibly as the opening shot literally plunged us over the skyscrapers of Gotham City in terrifying 52 foot goodness. Yes, it is possible to suffer vertigo from a cinema seat. And so ‘The Dark Knight’ gets off to a breathtaking start, and continues to spend much of its 152 minutes holding its audience in breathless fear and anticipation. It’s hell of a ride, not for the faint hearted.
Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker is obviously dominating discussion about film – and quite fairly so on its own merits, without the tragedy of the actor’s untimely death in January – but this reviewer would argue that one of the weaknesses of the film is that its titular character is not really given enough material to genuinely compete with his manic antagonist. The Joker, whose character is in history and brilliant effect an essentially immovable object, is arguably shown to have more layers than either of Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne or Batman.
