David Dimbleby receives RTS lifetime achievement award

David Dimbleby

Veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby, host of current affairs and political programmes at the BBC, has received a lifetime achievement gong at the Royal Television Society's (RTS) journalism awards.

The 72-year-old has been an enduring figure in British television thanks to his work on programmes such as the BBC's flagship political show Question Time in a career spanning five decades.

Judges described the anchor, who joined the BBC as a news reporter in Bristol and went on to preside over eight general election night results programmes, as a "giant of television journalism".

Over the course of his career, Dimbleby has covered everything from the state opening of parliament and the Trooping the Colour to the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and visits by foreign leaders.

Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow was named presenter of the year during the RTS ceremony in London, while Sky News' Alex Crawford walked away with a second consecutive television journalist of the year accolade.
