'I've got it beat' Michael Douglas says of throat cancer

Michael Douglas

Hollywood star Michael Douglas has revealed he may have beaten throat cancer after undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment that took a toll on his health in recent times.

Just five months after revealing he was suffering from the condition, the 66-year-old expressed confidence he had beaten it in an interview where he declared that "the tumour is gone".

Speaking to Matt Lauer on US TV network NBC's Today show, Douglas, who is married to Welsh star Catherine Zeta Jones, said: "The odds are, with the tumour gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer, that I've got it beat."

"But, you know, I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain. I'll probably take a couple of months of getting checked out. But it's been a wild six-month ride."

Douglas recently appeared in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, a sequel to his 1987 hit Wall Street in which he played Gordon Gekko and went on to win an Oscar for best actor.
