Shakira and boyfriend announce spilt

Colombian singer, songwriter Shakira and Argentinean boyfriend Antonio de la Rua have parted ways and put to an end a romantic relationship that has lasted for a decade, it has been revealed.

A joint message on Shakira's website announced the breakup, which apparently occurred in August, but it also made clear that the separation is being viewed as a temporary arrangement.

"During our almost 11 years together we have loved each other deeply, taken care of each other and stood by one another," wrote the couple, who stated their friendship "is unwavering and indestructible".

"They have been the most wonderful years of our lives, and thanks to that love and the respect that we share for one another we have been an exceptional couple and partners," added the statement.

Rua, who is an attorney and the eldest son of former Argentine president Fernando de la Rua, has been overseeing Shakira's business and career interests and looks set to continue playing this role.
