War Horse races ahead of the Iron Lady

War Horse has raced to the top of the box office.

Steven Spielberg's latest film 'War Horse' has galloped ahead of 'The Iron Lady' to top the UK box office.

The film, which is based on the novel by Michael Morporgo and subsequent play, took £3.9 million in the first weekend of its release, reports Digital Spy.

It has toppled 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol' from the top spot after three weeks and raced past 'The Iron Lady'.

On 15 January, Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the biopic of the first female prime minister.

She thanked England '"for allowing her to trample all over their history" in her acceptance speech.

Spielberg's film stars Jeremy Irvine and Benedict Cumberbatch. It tells the story of a young man trying to find his horse, from which he is separated due to the First World War, in the trenches.

The director is best-known for the 'Indiana Jones' series, 'E.T' and 'Jurassic Park'.
