Janet Jackson signs film deal

Janet Jackson

Singer and actress Janet Jackson has signed a deal with Lionsgate Films.

The star will work with the company to develop a diverse range of projects, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Many people forget I started out as an actor," Jackson told the publication.

"I have been fortunate to work in the film industry, though not as much as I would like. I have a passion for storytelling, and have been doing it through my music for some time."

Michael Paseornek, president of motion picture production and development at Lionsgate Films, said Jackson has a powerful on-screen presence and is likely to have an equally powerful presence behind the screens.

"While developing a relationship with Janet Jackson over the course of three films, we recognised her instincts for storytelling," he added.

Some of the films she has appeared in over the years include Poetic Justice, For Coloured Girls and Why Did I Get Married?
