Natalie Portman criticises designer Galliano

Natalie Portman

Oscar winning actress Natalie Portman has slammed Dior designer John Galliano after a video emerged which appeared to show him making anti-Semitic remarks.

In a statement released earlier this week, the Jewish star - who is the face of Miss Dior perfume - said she is "shocked" and "disgusted" by the video.

"In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way," Portman said.

"I hope at the very least these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful."

The British designer has now been dismissed by the French fashion house.

Portman scooped an Academy Award earlier this week for her performance as a ballerina in the psychological thriller Black Swan.

The 29-year-old beat off stiff competition from fellow actresses Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Williams.
