Julia Roberts cracks a smile for Lavazza's coffee

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts, who was once Hollywood's highest paid actress, is appearing in a 45-second advertisement for Italian coffee house Lavazza, as part of the company's Christmas campaign.

The 43-year-old actress known for playing roles in high grossing blockbusters including Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich was reportedly paid €1.2 million (£1.14 million) to star in the advertisements, reports the Daily Mail.

Despite the lucrative sum, the Academy Award-winning star does not utter a single word in the heavenly advertisement in which she plays Botticelli's Venus in a setting in the clouds.

Set to be screened over the Christmas period in Italy, the advertisement portrays her as a difficult muse who refuses to smile for the painter until she is offered some of Lavazza's A Modo Mio coffee.

Roberts filmed the advertisement just two weeks ago during a brief visit to Rome where she also shot her latest movie Eat Pray Love, which starred Oscar winner Javier Bardem, James Franco and Richard Jenkins.

Jamie Oliver second best selling author in Britain

Jamie Oliver

British chef Jamie Oliver has achieved a new milestone after UK sales of his cookbooks catapulted him into being the biggest-selling author in the country after Harry Potter creator JK Rowling.

The 35-year-old restaurateur and media personality's books, including his latest entitled Jamie's 30-Minute Meals, which is shifting around 80,000 copies a week, have raised more than £100 million.

Although he is in second place, Oliver has some miles to cover before equalling Rowling's £228 million, but he need not worry about losing his current position as the next best-selling cook is Delia Smith at £62.5 million.

Since its release in September, 30-Minute Meals, which is one of many books written by Oliver, has sold more than half a million copies and is "the biggest selling non-fiction book of any kind since records began", according to Tom Weldon of publisher Penguin General Books.

He explained: "The reason Jamie has done so well over the past decade is that he is obsessed with every single detail in his books."

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone mugged in central London

Bernie Ecclestone

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone was taken to a west London hospital for treatment after being injured in a mugging incident that took place on the streets of the English capital.

The 80-year-old billionaire, who recently suggested that the city's streets were more violent than those of Brazil, suffered a head injury after being kicked and punched by his attackers.

Scotland Yard revealed that Ecclestone also lost jewellery worth £200,000 following the incident, which happened on Wednesday (November 24) outside the headquarters of his firm Formula One Holdings in Knightsbridge.

Ecclestone, who was in the company of a woman, recently likened London's street crime levels to those of Sao Paulo after the attempted carjacking of former F1 champion and McLaren Mercedes driver Jenson Button.

He said at the time: "They look for victims, they look for anyone that looks like a soft touch and not too bright they never go after them. The people that look a bit soft and simple, they will always have a go at."

Hollywood stars John Travolta and Kelly Preston are now the proud parents of a new baby following the birth of a boy who they have named Benjamin.

The Pulp Fiction star, 56, and 48-year-old Preston welcomed the new member of the family in a Florida hospital on Tuesday (November 23rd) almost two years on from the death of their teenage son Jett

A statement from the family stated: "John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family. Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully."

This is good news for the couple, who married in 1991, as the last few months have been difficult for them following the death of Jett, who suffered a fatal seizure in January 2009 during a family holiday in the Bahamas.

It was revealed that two people tried to extort money from the family following the tragedy and further heartbreak followed in May this year when two family dogs were killed in an accident.

Justin Timberlake still keen on producing music

Justin Timberlake

American singer Justin Timberlake has reassured fans that he is not yet done with producing music after concentrating on acting in the last few years.

It is nearly four years since the six-time Grammy Award-winning star produced any album, but this need not concern any worried fans as he simply cannot multitask, he said on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

He explained to the hostess: "I'm a male and I lack the ability to do two things at the same time. And I can tell you that the day I comprehended that, my life became much easier."

Timberlake went on to explain that acting involves trying to take on a different character, adding "it's such a transformation mentally, that trying to write music at the same time - it would suck".

Fans can hear his voice in his latest film, the animated movie Yogi Bear, which comes after his star turnout in The Social Network and Shrek Forever After released earlier in the year.

Sarah Palin: Simon Cowell 'upholds the highest standards'

Simon Cowell

Music mogul Simon Cowell has attracted unexpected praise from former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who has applauded his habit of being honest with contestants on US show American Idol.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate singled out the British music executive and television producer in her new book entitled America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag.

In one of a number of scanned pages of the book on the US website Gawker, Palin said Cowell is "almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths" to deluded contestants on the show.

"No one they've encountered in their lives – from their parents to their teachers to their president – wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth. So they grew up convinced they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson," she wrote.

The book goes on to say that "Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards, and something in us recognises and responds to that".

Cowell, who is 51, takes a similar position of hard truths on the X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, which air on ITV1.

American actor and film producer Michael Douglas has one less thing to worry about after ex-wife Diandra Douglas's lawsuit against him was dismissed by a Manhattan judge.

James Blunt reveals role in the Balkans war

James Blunt

English singer-songwriter James Blunt, a former army officer, has revealed how his actions may have helped prevent the Balkans war escalating into a much bigger conflict.

Speaking to John Pienaar on Radio 5 Live's Pienaar's Politics, the 36-year-old claimed that his refusal to obey orders to attack a 200-strong Russian side prevented the start of World War Three.

The former cavalry officer in the British Army said he was leading a Nato column under order to seize the Pristina airfield in Kosovo in 1999 when he was faced with the difficult situation.

"I was given the direct command to overpower ... 200 or so Russians. And the practical consequences of that political reason would be then aggression against the Russians," he explained.

"I was declining my order. I was very clear on that," stated the chart-topping musician, who said fortunately, British general Sir Mike Jackson came on the radio and overruled US general Wesley Clark's instructions.

Blunt is known for hits such as You're Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover.

Sebastian Vettel youngest ever F1 title holder

Sebastian Vettel

German Formula One racing driver Sebastian Vettel has become the youngest ever person to win the drivers' title after charging to victory in an exciting season-ending outing in Abu Dhabi.

The 23-year-old won the 2010 season after coming from behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who was tipped as the favourite to win in light of his eight-point advantage, and fellow Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, who was second in the standings.

However, an impressive pole to finish charge from the young driver and strategy errors by his rivals ensured Vettel replaced British racer Lewis Hamilton as the youngest F1 title holder.

Vettel has since revealed that he drew inspiration from former Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen, who won the championship by a single point in 2007 after having trailed Hamilton by 17 points, with only 20 up for grabs.

"What he achieved three years ago was very special because no one thought it was possible," said the racer, who also helped his team Red Bull clinch the constructor's title for the first time this year.

Gordon Ramsay's father-in-law is suing him for unfair dismissal, it emerged today (November 12th).

Chris Hutcheson was dismissed as the chief executive of his company, Gordon Ramsay Holdings, last month after working with the chef for the past 12 years.

However, the 62-year-old is now fighting back and has appointed law firm Schillings in a bid to claim £2 million in compensation, according to a new report by the Sun.

Ramsay published an open letter earlier this week in which he revealed that he hired a private detective to monitor Hutcheson's actions in his role with the company.

The F Word star suggested that the removal of his father-in-law was welcomed by other employees and stopped his "manipulation and controlling of so many lives".

Ramsay also claimed that Hutcheson and his wife, Greta, have severed ties with daughter Tana and the couple's four children in the wake of his dismissal.

X Factor 'could have fifth judge' - News on Bio.

X Factor 'could have fifth judge'

Cowell is weighing up expanding the panel

The next series of X Factor could see the aspiring pop stars being assessed by five judges, it emerged this week.

Music mogul Simon Cowell, boss of the hit television show, held a feedback session with fans in London to discuss various ideas, according to a new report in the Sun.

One of the main recommendations was for a fifth member to be added to a judges' panel which is currently comprised of Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh.

A source told the newspaper: "The idea is 90 per cent a done deal. Simon has always thought a guest judge on live shows would bring some extra drama to proceedings.

"And he hopes they will shoot from the hip and put a rocket under the rest of the judges, who often bite their tongues."

The revelation comes after the recent controversy which saw Cole refuse to vote out one of her two acts, Katie Waissel and Treyc Cohen, following the sing-off.

As a result, Cohen was voted out 2-1 by the other judges, but critics have suggested that Waissel would have received the boot with fewer viewer votes if the panel had reached deadlock.

Corbett: Comedians are no longer 'genuinely funny'

Corbett (left) formed The Two Ronnies with Ronnie Barker

Ronnie Corbett has heavily criticised the UK's new breed of comics, suggesting that they are not genuinely funny.

The 79-year-old, who was one half of The Two Ronnies, claimed that he was frozen out by the BBC and other television networks in favour of more edgy performers.

However, he queried their ability to work a crowd with a natural form of comedy, while also revealing that his refusal to swear in his performances has been held against him.

He told Saga magazine: "There are many around who do not really have a feel for comedy. They can say outrageous things, have clever thought and deliver some funny angles.

"[But] they are not interested in a particular style of performance. The great Tommy Cooper could just walk on stage and the audience would dissolve into laugher, just from looking at him."

Corbett also dismissed suggestions that he is too nice, explaining that he would never have survived in showbusiness for over 50 years without knowing how to fight his corner.

Rising to prominence in David Frost's 1960s satirical comedy programme The Frost Report, Corbett went on to star in The Two Ronnies and sitcoms Sorry! and No - That's Me Over Here!

She told the newspaper: "I'm still single and not really looking at the moment as I'm so busy with work.

"I'm going home to Kent and looking forward to spending time with my family and friends."

The 30-year-old beauty also revealed that she is preparing to read for a "top-secret" play featuring an all-woman cast.

Brook, who topped FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World list in 2005, has also been romantically involved with actors Billy Zane and Jason Statham in the past.

EU funds 'wrongly used' to pay for Elton John gig - News on Bio.

EU funds 'wrongly used' to pay for Elton John gig

Sir Elton is one of the UK's best-loved recording artists

Sir Elton John was paid for a gig in Naples with EU cash which had been earmarked for promoting development in southern Italy, it has been suggested.

The British singer received €600,000 (£510,000) for a concert he played in the city's main piazza on September 11th 2009, according to reports in Italian newspapers.

Although there has been no indication that Sir Elton was aware of the apparent error, the European Commission (EC) is now investigating the situation.

"Regional development fund money was used for this project, and we now have to assess whether it fell within the funding rules," said Ton van Lierop, the EC's regional policy spokesman.

"We're looking into it in scrupulous detail but we need all the information before we can make an assessment."

Sir Elton, whose real name is Reg Dwight, is one of the UK's most successful musicians of all time, having sold more than 250 million records during his four-decade career.

Fans flock to McCartney gig in Brazil

McCartney is revered around the world

Paul McCartney's first performance in Brazil for almost 18 years drew a sell-out crowd of 66,000, it has been confirmed.

Fans began queuing on Wednesday (November 3rd) - four days before the gig at the Beira Rio Stadium - with tents made of cardboard, blankets and tarpaulin.

McCartney, who is currently touring South America, admitted afterwards that he was delighted to see that Beatlemania is alive and well in the continent.

"I always think I have Latin blood because I connect so strongly with their love of music and their love of rhythm and their love of melody, so I always feel like I have a very big bond with South American people and Latin people in general," he said.

The 68-year-old played the next date in his 'Up and Coming' tour at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina last night, with another performance taking place tonight.

McCartney is the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music, according to Guinness World Records.

Schiffer turns to pilates after birth of third child

Schiffer is married to film producer Matthew Vaughn

Claudia Schiffer has been making use of pilates to get back to fitness after the birth of her third child, it emerged today (November 10th).

The occasional actress is primarily known for being one of the world's most successful models, having appeared on more than 500 magazine covers during her career.

Schiffer's success would not have been possible without being dedicated to fitness and she showed this commitment after giving birth to daughter Cosima Violet six months ago.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, personal trainer Dave Higgins revealed that the 40-year-old has been a regular visitor to his TenPilates studio in Notting Hill.

"After the baby, she was coming three times a week, but now she comes every day," he told the newspaper.

"It's really high-intensive pilates and she loves it, as opposed to the gym, which she absolutely hates."

Schiffer is believed to be one of the wealthiest German women of her generation, with Forbes Magazine once putting her net worth at £38 million.
