James Cameron announces plans for 'Avatar' theme parks

An Avatar theme park will be set up.

Film director James Cameron has announced plans to develop Avatar Land, which will be the first of many theme parks based on the sci-fi blockbuster that was released in 2009.

The 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' director revealed that the first theme park based on the film will begin construction in 2013 and will be part of Disney World's Animal Kingdom.

He said: "Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experimental storytelling.

"[To] give park goers the chance to see, hear and touch the world of Avatar with an unprecedented sense of reality."

The director is currently working on two sequels to the hit film, with reports suggesting that the second film in the series will be set for release in time for Christmas 2014.

Avatar' stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver. It tells the story of a blue race of aliens called the Na'vi whose home planet Pandora is under threat from humans.

It became the highest-grossing film of all time.
