Kate Winslet wins Emmy for Best Actress

Kate Winslet has won her first Emmy.

British actress Kate Winslet won her first ever Emmy last night (18th September) for her leading role in Mildred Pierce.

The 35-year-old played a mother during the Great Depression in the five-part mini series by HBO.

As she took to the stage, the Titanic actress paid tribute to her own mother while accepting the award.

Winslet said: "Mildred Pierce was capable of great acts of love as a mother. It doesn't matter how old you are or what you do with your life, you will never stop needing your mum. And I will never stop needing mine, so thanks mum."

The actress looked stunning in a full length red gown designed by Elle Saab and was handed her award by fellow British actor Hugh Laurie.

Her co-star in Mildred Pierce, Guy Pearce, won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor and joked that he got to have sex with Winslet many times as part of the show.

Winslet was the youngest person to accrue six Academy Award Nominations and won her first Oscar in 2008 for her role in The Reader.
