Denise Robertson is a woman of many parts. George Michael has called her “a diamond" and she is the best loved contributor on the nation’s best loved daytime show "This Morning" and has been so since she started 21 years ago. She has written prolifically for the Daily Express, has a weekly Agony Aunt column in Chat Magazine, and is the author of over 40 romantic novels, which makes her also one of the most read writters. On top of all of this, Denise still has time for altruism, being the patron of over 30 charities. She was recently awarded a CBE as a result.
This one hour show will celebrate her achievements. With unique access behind the scenes of This Morning, see the show going live to the nation and how Denise spends her time in the phone-in room, hair and make up, and live in studio. Also view Denise at home near Durham, where she spends a lot of time writing her novels and running her Agony Aunt website, which receives thousands of hits every week. Watch clips of some of Denise’s most dramatic phone-ins, see her partying with Jerry Springer in Chicago and enjoy a clip from 37 years ago when she wrote her first radio play for the BBC.
But it's not always been fun and games for Denise Robertson. Despite her cheeriness, she has had more than a fair share of personal tragedy. Denise has been widowed twice and had to endure the untimely death of one of her sons, who passed away within months of being diagnosed with cancer, aged 43, leaving behind two small children. Financially she has also suffered from financial insecurity, even loosing the roof over her head once and finding it hard to feed her own children.
Denise will speak candidly in the programme about the difficulties life has dealt her. She will discuss her depression and low self-esteem; the difficulties in being a second wife, which she terms the Rebecca Syndrome; of the feelings of desolation when her children left home; and most recently about losing her beloved son, John.
Among those interviewed about her will be Fern Britten, Philip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Eamonn Holmes, Ruth Langsford and Jon Culshaw. As her TV colleagues, Fern, Philip and Eamonn all agree: “Denise Robertson is a national treasure ... she is wise, lively, spiritual, funny and mischievious” – a great subject for “In My Life."
